Swarm intelligence for global ocean research

Winner in category Initiatives

The SOOP sensor kit is a modular system for recreational sailors to collect essential ocean data. It solves the problem of insufficient data for climate models by turning private boats into part of a global Citizen Science network. Sustainably, it uses existing yachts, avoiding new infrastructure and efficiently using resources. It also promotes environmental awareness and supports the "Blue Economy."

"SOOP" impresses with its innovative citizen science approach and clearly distinguishes itself from existing solutions: the successful combination of modular hardware, an intuitive app, and strong design creates a scalable system for global ocean research. Design, technology, and participation interlock in an exemplary manner.
