Lucid Life

Living bioluminescent materials
Vote now

Lucid Life is a flexible textile made with living, bioluminescent micro-algae that glows when touched. Developed through a partnership between science and traditional Polynesian knowledge, it redefines materials by creating a responsive, interactive interface that encourages care and connection to nature. It is sustainable as the micro-algae photosynthesize and purify water, offering a regenerative alternative to synthetic materials. The project is seeking to patent the technology for the benefit of nature.

Chris Bellamy is a biodesigner whose work bridges science, craft, and ecology. Trained at the University of the Arts London, he creates living materials that rethink how humans relate to non-human life. His project Lucid Life embodies this approach, uniting bioluminescent microalgae with ancestral craft to inspire ecological awareness. His work has been recognised internationally, and has culminated in a collaboration with Iris van Herpen.
