The 15-Minute Claim Hunt

The 15-Minute Claim Hunt

The 15-Minute Claim Hunt

A claim rarely becomes risky in one dramatic moment. More often, it changes by a few words at a time.

Imagine the first version says: "The bottle contains 80% recycled PET." It is precise, documented and linked to one component. Packaging needs less text, so the sentence becomes "Made with recycled PET." The webshop shortens it again to "Recycled bottle." A retailer turns that into a green badge. Social media finally introduces the product as "our sustainable choice."

Nobody sat in a meeting and decided to exaggerate. The claim simply travelled.

That is why the first useful EmpCo exercise is not a policy review. It is a scavenger hunt. Choose one product, set a timer for 15 minutes and follow the customer journey. Look at the packaging, webshop, retailer listings, marketplace copy, social posts, ads, sales material, labels and point-of-sale communication. Save what you find exactly as the customer sees it.

The screenshots usually tell a story. A percentage vanishes. A claim that once referred to the packaging starts sounding as if it covers the whole product. A certification becomes a general quality promise. A carefully qualified sentence turns into a headline with no context.

Now the team has something concrete to work with. Not a debate about whether the company is "good at claims", but a visible set of messages that can be compared with the evidence and intended scope.

An EmpCo Product Claims Check-up takes that set further. It reviews the public wording and available documentation for one product, identifies where meaning and evidence no longer match, and turns the findings into priorities.

The aim is not to make sustainability communication smaller. It is to stop a precise fact from becoming a promise the product was never meant to make.
