SALVINIA

Systems for cleaning oil-polluted waterways
Vote now

SALVINIA is a system for removing oil pollution from inland and coastal waters. It uses a bionic textile, inspired by the Salvinia molesta plant, to physically separate oil from water without chemicals or energy. The reusable products (oil boom, mobile skimmer, stationary buoy) reduce waste, minimize maintenance, and allow for the recovery and recycling of the oil. The stationary buoy is solar-powered for illumination.

I’m studying Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. The Academy encourages experimentation and critical thinking, which is essential in shaping my design approach. We work on real-world projects, with each student having great freedom in choosing and defining their concepts. The workshops provide me with hands-on experience, and I have the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and with companies. This interdisciplinary approach helps me learn to create products that are not only aesthetic and functional but also responsible.
