Ostra Cyprus

Oyster shell ceramic biomaterial

A biodegradable and recyclable ceramic-like biomaterial developed using ocean ingredients: oyster shells and sodium alginate, a natural polysaccharide found in brown algae. The project explores the current operating system and supply chain of oysters, modifying it towards a more circular model in Brighton, UK. Working with waste oyster shells collected from restaurants, the aim is to disrupt the “waste” from going to landfill by developing a useful material for designing and making products while exploring its potential through the use of multiple making processes like molding and 3D printing.
